John Daly debunket hockeykøllen - i november 2000

John Lawrence Daly var en av de mest kjente klimaskeptikerne for noen år siden. Han døde i 2004, til The Teams uttrykte lettelse.

Jeg kjente godt til Daly og hans webside Still Waiting for Greenhouse.

Det jeg imidlertid ikke var klar over, var at han debunket hockeykøllen allerede i november 2000 med en artikkel på nettstedet sitt: The "Hockey Stick": A New Low in Climate Science".

To disprove the `Hockey Stick', it is sufficient to merely demonstrate conclusively the existence of the Medieval Warm Period and/or the Little Ice Age in proxy and/or historical evidence from around the world. According to the `falsifiability' principle of science, substantial physical evidence that contradicts a theory is sufficient to `falsify' that theory. To that end, `exhibits' of physical evidence are presented below to prove that not only is the `Hockey Stick' false, but that the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age were not only very real - but also global in extent.

The evidence from the `exhibits' is overwhelming. From all corners of the world, the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age clearly shows up in a variety of proxy indicators, proxies more representative of temperature than the inadequate tree rings used by Michael Mann.

What is disquieting about the `Hockey Stick' is not Mann's presentation of it originally. As with any paper, it would sink into oblivion if found to be flawed in any way. Rather it was the reaction of the greenhouse industry to it - the chorus of approval, the complete lack of critical evaluation of the theory, the blind acceptance of evidence which was so flimsy. The industry embraced the theory for one reason and one reason only - it told them exactly what they wanted to hear.

Proponents of the `Hockey Stick' should recall George Orwell's `Nineteen Eighty-Four', a black SF drama in which his fictional totalitarian regime used `memory holes' to re-invent past history [22]. In this age of instant communication, there is no `memory hole' big enough to overturn the historical truth about the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age.

For oss som har lest den spennende føljetongen om hockeykøllen på Climate Audit og ikke minst Andrew Montfords briljante oppsummering av den i sin bok "The Hockey Stick Illusion", kan Dalys tidlige debunking nærmest virke profetisk, men den gir også et godt historisk bilde av at "forskere" flest helt sikkert ikke var så dumme eller så dårlig informert i 1998 at de ikke skjønte at dette var høyst tvilsom vitenskap. På et mer psykologisk grunnlag blir da "forskernes" raseri mot kritikere mer forståelig - det kommer av at de har forsvart - og stadig forsvarer - noe de innerst inne vet ikke er vitenskapelig holdbart. Det kan ikke være enkelt å være i en slik situasjon, og skytset rettes mot budbringeren for å unngå å ta budskapet inn over seg.

COMPUTER hackers have broken into Britain's leading climate science research centre, making public thousands of private emails between top climate change scientists.

The messages – more than 2000 emails and 3000 documents – lay bare bitter disagreements about the cause of climate change.

In one email, the head of Britain's Climatic Research Unit, Phil Jones, says he is "cheered" by news of the sudden death of a prominent Australian climate sceptic, John L. Daly, who died of a heart attack at his Launceston home in 2004.
